The Other Half of 2018
The
remaining half of 2018 is highly anticipated. The First 100 Days pledged by the
new Pakatan government would be one of them. Thus, we will see several, if not
many changes ahead. First and most importantly, the GST will not apply any
longer effective June 1st. This, however, will be replaced by the
previous SST (Sales & Service Tax). That’s one good news.
Secondly,
many anticipated the abolished of tolls collections especially in West
Malaysia. Tolls collections have been a pain in the pockets to Malaysians
living in West Malaysia. This may be a great relieve to us but it will cost the
government a massive amount.
I see
changes may come in the education sector. I really hope the new highly educated
Minister of Education foresee these changes are needed to our already eroded education
system. I would suggest a scrap on some of the exams, which took tolls on young
students. Schools should be made a learning playground, where knowledge are
shared. Allocations of teachers to Sarawak and Sabah should prioritized the
locals.
We hope to
see real developments in the rural areas of Sabah and Sarawak. Basic
necessities should not be shoved under the carpet. Rural roads, water and
electricity supply should be emphasized. Rural economics must be reviewed as
well. The new federal government should encourage more on small plantation
ownership as it will flourish the livelihoods and many rural folks. Housing
for the less income families must also be emphasized. Dilapidated school
conditions should be repaired, as well as rural clinics.
I see
positive real economic outcome in the country. The new government pledge to
scrap many mega projects that are bound unnecessary to proceed. Re-tendering of
previously awarded projects which were overpriced will save the country a
wholesome. We hope to see the economic culture of Penang and Selangor to be
practiced in the country. These two states can be a good example and a basis
for the new government.
We hope the
new government will restore the country’s pride and reputation, both
domestically and internationally. Racial and religious tensions must be a
number one priority. No land is safe if there is no peace and harmony among a
multiracial and multireligious country like ours. The federal government must
uphold the law of the country and tighten its legal and policing system without
favoritism and prejudice. The new Pakatan government must portray a government
that is For the People, By the People and Of the People.
